Podcasts i consume

Killing time is wasting time.  There are so many minutes throughout the day that are spent with no return.  People need to start looking at their time as currency.  Ask yourself, what is the ROI (return on investment) for this minute?  Is there value added to my life? I don’t necessarily tell you how to spend your time because we all see value added in different ways.  For some, slipping into a music coma or getting lost in a good fiction novel are value added minutes.  That is not the case for me.  I am at a point in my life where I want to learn.  I want to consume and grow my knowledge base.  The easiest and most time efficient method is through audiobooks and podcasts.  Listening to podcasts can be done on long bike rides, at work, and commutes.  All of the podcasts I listen to can be broken into three categories: health, lifestyle, and history (news).  The following list is in order of favoritism.
  1. The Tim Ferriss Show: Tim Ferriss is a leader in life optimization.  He interviews a wide variety of athletes and industry leaders to understand their habits and rituals.  He has a great variety of guests as well as show types.  Sometimes he just lets people answer listener questions and sometimes he drunk dials people.
  2. Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast: How do I describe Ben Greenfield?  I would say he is the most physically fit open minded nutrition and health podcaster.  Ben sounds like a stereotypical surfer but don’t let that voice fool you.  I guarantee you will learn some crazy method to increase sex drive, recover faster, or have more energy during the day.  He ranges from “Woo-woo” methods to methods rooted deep with scientific research.
  3. The Art of Manliness:  As the name suggests, this podcast is directed towards the male gender.  I would actually say this is more along the lines of the Tim Ferriss show but shorter episodes.  The host dives into health and lifestyle topics in episodes that last around an hour.
  4. Unfilter: a current event podcast hosted by two computer geeks.  They use a wide variety of media sources to provide multiple angles on current events.  The podcast is funded by listeners and not corporations, which removes any financial obligations.  Episodes are usually 2 hours long, the perfect amount of time for a long drive.
  5. The Rich Roll Podcast:  Rich Roll is a vegan ultramarathoner from California.  I can tell you, he is another stereotypical Cali boy.  The surprising thing is that his show is not really focused on the vegan diet.  He has transitioned into an interview based podcast.  He doesn’t limit himself to just athletes either.  Just recently he interviewed Travis Barker, the world famous drummer.  Episodes are typically 2 hours long and packed with life changing information.
  6. The School of Greatness:  A podcast that can be hit or miss.  Alex Howes, the host, interviews industry leaders and athletes in a similar manor to Tim Ferriss.  Alex Howes has a more athletic background and that tends to shine through more than Tim.  At times, Alex can seem a little full of himself and talk over his guest.  Overall, the content is still great and I love hearing about other people’s journey.
  7. Endurance Planet: So typically the above podcasts are enough to get through the week.  About once a month I make it past the first 6 podcasts and end up on Endurance Planet.  Endurance Planet has a big focus on triathlon training and regularly hosts Ask the Coaches where Tawnee and Tim Waggoner (aka Lucho) answer listener questions.  The podcast can get repetitive because every episode just seems to revolve around Metabolic Optimization and using the Maffatone training style.
  8. House of Run:  The best running focused podcast hosted by two energetic and extremely knowledgeable people.  Now, this is not a training podcast.  This podcast is purely focused on the professional running scene.  They dive into the current events, race predictions, drug bans, and cap it off with listener emails.  It is nothing fancy but a great way to pass the time and stay up to date on professional running.
  9. Velonews: Short podcast episodes that dive into the culture of cycling.  Doesn’t really cover any cycling news.
  10. CyclingTips Podcast:  This is similar to the Velonews podcast but a little more lengthy.  Essentially, it is audio blirbs taken from interviews that were written into articles.  It is narrated by a couple of the writers for CyclingTips.  It can be a little dry but still a good place to get information on “behind the scene” of pro cycling.
